Off to school

So this week my youngest started school. Shouldn't be too painful, right? Been there before? Well he is Mum's boy and the eldest was more than ready for school.

So bags full, pockets with extra tissues and a heart slowly tearing I took him to school on Monday. What was I worried about? Was I worried about a tantrum, tears, wanting to go home, what about him? OK, seriously. They were concerns, but I new those would pass. But what were my concerns? Was I worried that i would cry & embarrass myself, nope did that on a school visit day. Was I worried that he wouldn't cry? Was I worried that this was the beginning, my baby was growing up and this was but the beginning to the end? Hmmm, could be!

So what happened? After a nervous moment waiting to go into class, we got him settled. (The joy of being second is he knows the routine from his sister). We sat down and looked at the letters and numbers on his desk and read them together. Then the bell went. I held my breath! Only to be greeted with "Mum, that's the bell. You need to go now". What my job here is done? No tears? Not even mine. Not needing to be told twice I left the class and drove off to my first appointment.

Now I started thinking about why I felt the way I did. Then the most amazing thing happened. A rainbow appeared.

I knew he was going to be OK. Better still I felt calm and knew that I was going to be OK. Now I can't say every day has been roses, he is 4 and does get tired. But you know what? I reckon it will all work out!

Why I think schoolgirls should wear their hair up

Allow me to clarify one thing, I used to hate wearing my hair up as a child. Well to school at least, ballet was another thing.

My daughter loves wearing her hair up. Even though her hair is bobbed because she wanted to only wear a headband to school, she still puts it up.

So what is different, she still gets knots and grizzles about me brushing it! She attends private school and is required to wear shoulder length hair up. I went to public school.

I can now appreciate why it is beneficial for them to wear it up.

Safety

It is safer for them to have long hair up.

We always had to tie our hair back for Home Ec., Tech Studies and Science. It was safer.
I imagine it is also safer for the playground. Though a ponytail can have a mean whip to it.

Health

It is true that it reduces the ability of a lice to move from one child to another. I think this alone should make it mandatory in all schools.

It can make it harder for them to chew their hair. I admit it, my daughter has just started to do this.

It keeps the hair out of their eyes.

Academically
Seems a stretch, but it is easier to concentrate if you don't have to constantly sweep hair out of your face or off of your page (yes my hair was once that long).

Self-worth

I think that making a child wear their hair up can help them develop a sense of pride in their appearance and improve self-worth.

So maybe Schooled Up Hair Accessories can even be good for you and provide a community service? What do you think?

A bit about Schooled Up

So if you have seen me on facebook, you know I am Kara, I own Schooled Up Hair Accessories and I have two children (and a husband).

What you might not know is as a girl I kept my ribbons neatly pegged on a hanger in my wardrobe. Didn't know that? Well before I could do my own hair my Mum used to give me a top-knot hairdo with a ribbon.

I remember sitting for hours in my bedroom, aged about 12, continuously folding and re-folding ribbon roses.

So why did it come as a surprise that when I couldn't find any suitable hairties for our daughter in the shops that I decided to make some.

Well little did I know that I would re-ignite a childhood passion and embark on a magical journey into satin, velvet, felt, markets, wholesaling and retailing!

What wasn't a surprise is that I have kept my grassroots simple & elegant style, attention to detail and desire for the perfect and special look.

I hope you enjoy it too!
